[VIDEO] President Maddow?

» 17 June 2010 »

Rachel Maddow delivers the Oval Office address she wished President Obama had given this week.

“The political cowardice that has kept politicians from doing right by this country, finally, on energy, and standing up to the oil industry — that cowardice has been drowned; drowned in oil on Queen Bess Island. There is a new reality in this country that has been forced on us by this disaster.”

I can’t say that I disagree with anything that she said.

This is a fine liberal criticism of the state of affairs. and full of gratifying and cathartic vitriol. unfortunately, while i don't necessarily disagree with her, this is not what a President says. this is not how policy is made. this is not how nations are led. BESIDES Obama basically said all these things, he just said them less stridently.

he admitted fault to allowing deep-water drilling based on false assurances from the the oil industry; he said he would work to mitigate the effects of Oil Spill.

that “russian roulette” bit is just a bit pedantic, i think. we play “russian roulette” with Americans lives all the time. its part of being American. of living in a “free” economy, and having to fend for yourself in competitive fields, accruing debt, following the stock market, etc. Oil drilling is DANGEROUS work. and, excuse me: shit happens.

i like Maddow generally, but I really find her annoying when she condescends to the President. the assumption is that SHE knows everything and that the President does not know enough. you think he's not updated on containment efforts? you think he doesn't think all the environmental destruction is a damnable tragedy?

and “the time for talk is over.”? proselytize much? no thanks. does she think that just saying “we WILL get off oil” its going pass in congress? does she think the president calling senators and congresspeople cowards is going to make them amenable to his agenda? he's there for 8 years, max. those other cats are trying to be in office for LIFE.

a nice speech. for Maddow. but i don't expect a president who is working on a) an explosive Israel-Palestine, b) an economy in a stalled climb out of recession, and c) IRAN/AFGHANISTAN/IRAQ to give personal daily updates on the gulf spill. he's got a Press Secretary for a reason, people.

what else do they want this president to do? are people dying of thirst? being forced to loot stores to eat? is there something further HE can do to fix the oil spill?

i get it. its frustrating because its not fixed, but this is not like Katrina at all. Bush could have saved lives by just mobilizing faster, by throwing money at the problem, by organizing the local authorities faster. Obama's got the Admiral of Coast Guard going hard at the problem and believe you me, they are throwing money at the spill. and the clean up is not gonna be some half-assed effort.

so make you headlines, MSNBC. but you might want to be wary of how full-tilt boogie you criticize the POTUS, because you're not really helping much yourselves. like, at all.
