[POLI] The Arizona Racist Trifecta

Arizona is like the gift that keeps on giving.  I mean, are these guys on a roll or are they on a roll?  Never before has one U.S. state enacted so much suspect legislation all in the same year…and all of it aimed at the same group of people: Mexicans.

First, there was the legendary “show me your papers or else” bill that was signed into law by Republican Governor Jan Brewer a few months ago.  Then, before that issue could even get cold, Arizona’s majority Republican legislator and Governor Brewer pass yet another law banning any “Ethnic Studies” classes such as Latino Studies courses.  And now, the creators of “F#ck You, Pablo!” and its sequel, “F#ck You, Pablo! Part II: The Mexican Book Burning” now bring you the third installment “F#ck You, Pablo! Part III: And Take Your Anchor Baby With You!”  That’s right, folks, it’s the trifecta: (1) We don’t want you here; (2) We don’t want anybody learning about you; and (3) We hate you so much, even if your baby is born here he or she doesn’t count as a citizen.

Arizona Republicans will likely introduce legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona–and thus American citizens according to the U.S. Constitution–to parents who are not legal U.S. citizens.

You really have to give it to Arizona.  If you’re going to discriminate, don’t half-ass it like these other cowards.  No, sir!  You go ALL IN!!!  I can respect it.  Really, I can.  This kind of brass balls hatred has been missing in recent politics. It’s about time people just came right out with it and stated their true feelings.  No more of this beat around the bush, passive aggressive, politically correct crap. Let us know how you REALLY feel.  Speaking of feelings:

58% of Americans polled by Rasmussen think illegal immigrants whose children are born here should not receive citizenship; support for that stance is 76% among Republicans.

Yeah, there’s just one small problem with that…this inconvenient little document that you might have heard of called the United States Constitution.  It states that people who are born in the United States are citizens of the United States.  Period.  To quote Section 1 of the 14th Amendment verbatim:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

Rarely do Constitutional issues become more straightforward than that, folks.  In fact, this law, if passed by Arizona, is so clearly unconstitutional that it might actually leap frog over the “papers, please” law in the race to the SCOTUS.  Until then, however, we can ask ourselves the following:

SHOULD the babies of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States (1) be considered U.S. citizens, and (2) should their birth justify the residency of illegal immigrant parents?

    Actually, SHOULD we ask that first question you state : “SHOULD the babies of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States (1) be considered U.S. citizens?” Because I think that question is already answered by the Constitution as you pointed out. Can you think of any justifiable reason why not? If you're born here, you're a citizen. I think that makes perfect sense as-is. We're very elitist with our citizenship granting, here. We don't mind more “desirable” people coming on over… It's those darned Mexicans people have a problem with, and thus any action taken on this must be seen through that lens. It's racially motivated.

    Also, I don't appreciate the comment below. “they just thought the whites hated the blacks so everything was okay??” Really. I would love for you to pose that to La Raza and see what kind of response you get. I would also love to see the reactions of the students all over the country who are fighting for the DREAM Act to a statement like that. I get that this is an outlet that is very snarky and sarcastic, and that is TWIB's charm. However, I that statement pits two minorities against each other in a way that is not helpful to the discourse, and really disrespects the struggles of a whole group that actually HAVE “smelled the hatred” as you so wittily (you think) put it.
