Dr. Rand Paul Is Not A Real Doctor?

» 15 June 2010 »

So Dr. Rand Paul might not really be a board certified doctor!?  America’s favorite Libertarian looks like he may have made up his own board of ophthalmology and then installed his wife as Vice President of said board. Meaning? He might not actually be an AMA certified physician. (HA!)

How libertarian of him!  Why go to fancy liberal schools and then apply for the required certification when you can just create it out of thin air like Sarah Palin’s new boobs!  Like I’ve said before, Rand Paul is my new favorite.  He is so not ready for primetime which only benefits those of us who find entertainment from political malpractice in the national spotlight.  So thank you Rand Paul for being you and keep it up!  Let’s hope his Democratic opponent Jack Conway will reap the benefits of your ineptitude.

Via The Lexington Herald-Leader:

Patients have come to expect that a doctor who holds himself out as a “board certified” specialist, as Paul does, meets rigorous standards created by an independent body?

And, if the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure and the American Academy of Ophthalmologists don’t recognize Paul’s National Board of Ophthalmology, exactly what are the standards required for certification by that board?

Read the rest over at FireDogLake.

I just want to clear up a misconception because your headline and opening sentence are misleading. Being specialty board certified does not make you a “real” doctor, but demonstrates you have met a level of excellence in a specific medical field. Once you graduate from medical school you are a doctor. After med school many go on to complete internship/residency. After you have completed all four components for medical licensure (USMLE Step 1, 2 CS, 2 CK, 3) then you are eligible for a state license and allowed to practice medicine independently (additional requirements vary by state). There are many practicing physicians who are NOT specialty board certified and this is not a requirement to practice medicine.

Anyone can go to the Kentucky licensure website and look up Rand Paul's information because it's public record. As long as his license with the state is active, then he is a “real” doctor.

Rand Paul is special for making up his own specialty board, and I'm going to leave it at that.

You gotta love all the republicans in Kentucky who voted for Rand Paul and brought him to national exposure, priceless. Lets face it they will try to vote this liar in but we can only wait and see if there is other skeltons in hs closet, oh yeah he is not a racist, I repeat, he is not a racist. Great thing is we are talking about Kentucky, so being a racist may be a positive, we will see.
