TWiB! Twitter Poll – What did you think of Obama’s “Non-Apology” Apology

» 24 July 2009 »

So in an attempt to gear up for CNN’s Latino In America in October, I decided to go out for a Mexican lunch (Yes, Soledad O’brien WAS narrating my waitress’s day. How’d you know?)  As I grabbed my second sangria my Blackberry exploded due to questions and commentary about the Presidents comments on his own comments regarding Henry Louis Gates. I came home, I watched it and I wasn’t sure what to think.

He never said “Sorry” but rather said “Calibrate“. I imagined in an alternate universe, where some white dude, with a love of hats is doing “This Week in Whiteness” this was probably the moment where he was getting really close to the camera and mocking Obama over his terminology. Damn you alternate universe me!

I don’t think Obama apologized. I don’t think he needed to. I also don’t believe Henry Louis Gates to be Rosa Parks (Sorry Michael Eric Dyson, seriously. That was a dumbass thing to say.) but I did a little poll with TWITTER asking what they thought of Obama’s response to everyone ELSE’s response to himself.  The poll numbers are like so.

graph (1)

I do want to mention a few things. First off, Re: “Black Cops speaking out against Obama.” The Cops speaking out have every right to but we all have to remind ourselves that they are COPS. COPS are close. Just because the Black Cops are sticking up for the officer involved, it DOES NOT mean he didn’t overreact. It means that these Cops play for their own team.

I have a terrible fear people. I’m scared that this is going to be the new example used anytime racial profiling is brought up. Anytime someone makes the claim, people are going to respond “Oh, yeah? Just like Skip Gates right? When they said a guy WHO TEACHES ABOUT RACIAL PROFILING right? Yeah Negroes, why don’t you fall back.”

I even found myself overstating the race aspect of the ACTUAL arrest. I appeared on CNN.COM and stated similarly that this was OBVIOUSLY a case of racial profiling. I need to clarify: It was obviously racial profiling that the White lady called the cops on the Black dudes trying to get in the house in the middle of the day. She could have said “Um, hey guys, whats up?” Its not like they were in the middle of the ‘hood, where speaking to your neighbors can get you shot.

But she didn’t.

She assumed it was a break in. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe that if 2 white guys, one of which was 5’7, graying hair with a cane, was trying to get into the house cops would have been called.

But I’ve listened to Gates. I’ve listened to the Cops. Read accounts from both sides. Gates was pissed. As I would have been. Freaked out. Cop didn’t like being freaked out on, and then responded with  ”Lets see you freak like this in Jail, bitch.” That’s what seems to happen from BOTH accounts. So is Henry Louis Gates the new Rosa? Hell no. Hell to the DOUBLE hell no.

But this incident doesn’t mean that Blacks aren’t racially profiled DAILY. It just means Gates wasn’t. The issue is just as important as ever. Obama should speak on it and I appreciate it. I also realize that he can’t fight these fights. Its up to folks like us to deal with this. Bogging Obama down with this just hurts everything. Healthcare is getting shot in the face as if it went hunting with Cheney.

I Love Post-Racial America. Don’t you?

    What you have to remember about Michael Eric Dyson is that he talks like a John Coltrane solo. He attempts to fill up as much space as possible with as much sound in a very small time frame.

    I get that Obama couldn’t “officially” apologize, but how bout just saying he was tired and off his game and a simple “my bad”. The incident involved someone he knows & it is Boston, son! But there is a whole country that lives without driving distance of an ocean that doesn’t get why a black man might react differently to a cop at his door than they would, and my fear is that Obama set that education back.

    Even as a white, affluent female, I agonize over this shit – I really do.

    The thing is, I acknowledge reality while striving for idealism just like Obama. I voted for him because he thinks likes me and speaks for me – and I’ve never experienced that in a politician before.

    I agreed with Obama’s original assessment – this was stupid. I don’t care how annoying or “disrespectful” Gate’s reaction was, the cop’s response escalated the situation beyond necessity, though there was probably not a violation of “protocol.”

    Obama’s non-apology was exactly right – trying further to calmly explain where he was coming from, respecting all parties, and saying, “let’s talk about this.”

    Anyone who says there’s nothing to talk about, and that there’s no room on either side for further understanding is … well, stupid.

    Man Obama does’nt have to apolgoize. He spoke from the heart. When you speak the truth there is no need for an apology. Amerikkka cant handle this brother. I realize that Obama is trying to remain race neutral, however this is Amerikkka. That racist ass Pat Buchanan needs to apologize for that bullshit he said last week.

    Gates was the one guilty of racial profiling. Because there have been many officers guilty of racial profiling, Gates assumed THIS officer was guilty of racial profiling and immediately went on the offensive. That provocation ultimately led to his arrest.

    How ironic…racial profiling a suspected racial profiler. And how hypocritical.

    Contrary to the very common belief that Obama’s election would soften racial tension, the opposite has actually happened, in my view.

    What I’ve gleaned from the blogosphere is that white people, in general, seem to have the attitude that all complaints about racial bias should now be permanently over because a black man is now president.

    This feeds directly into the Skip Gates incident. The underlying sense of outrage in the white community seems to be: “How dare this privileged black man (Gates) allege racial bias, with all of the preferences that he’s been given. And he now has a black president. Be happy.” On Obama’s side, he found out very quickly that he also is regarded as being ‘privileged’ to occupy the position that he does, and that arbitrary, off-the-cuff denigrations of white law enforcement officials simply will not be tolerated.

    Time will tell on how this plays out, but racial tensions seem to growing rather than receding since Obama’s ascension.

    Dave, I have to take exception to your conclusion about whites’ perception of this incident. This was such a clear incident of racial profiling…by Gates…that it highlighted the hypocrisy in the black community, i.e., blacks are incapable of racism…wrong! An officer performing his duty was challenged by a black citizen…solely because the officer was WHITE.

    I don’t doubt that some naive whites perceive that Obama’s election put an end to racism. But IMHO, the predominant basis for the sense of outrage in THIS case is the bias shown by Gates AND the bias shown by a President who judged the white officer while admitting that all the facts aren’t in.

    It’d be helpful in blacks would acknowledge their own capacity for racism. It clearly exists, as this incident so visibly shows.

    Bob, honeycomb, you need to realize what racism, especially in the u.s., actually means.
    Know this: Black people have a PARTICULAR history with White people. But any dislike a Black person would have for White people wouldn’t tend to affect White in the same way that it affects Black people when White people have a problem with us.
    Historically, a Black person’s dislike of White people hasn’t kept White people from:
    1)living where they want;
    2)borrowing money from a bank;
    3)going to a desired school;
    4)getting a job;
    5)voting/having their votes COUNT;
    6)knowing that the justice system; works FOR them, not AGAINST them;
    7)LIVING. period.

    So you need to know that when White people pull that “black people can be racist too” nonsense out of their butt, it makes you look all kinds of ignorant. and yes, STUPID.
