The underlying sense of outrage in the white community seems to be: “How dare this privileged black man (Gates) allege racial bias, with all of the preferences that he’s been given. And he now has a black president. Be happy.” On Obama’s side, he found out very quickly that he also is regarded as being ‘privileged’ to occupy the position that he does, and that arbitrary, off-the-cuff denigrations of white law enforcement officials simply will not be tolerated.
